About Clay Academy

The Clay Academy Progressive Learning System*

Established for Serious Potters... to get Seriously Established!

The Clay Academy Progressive Learning System was created for seriously interested new, emerging and returning potters who want to learn the craft with calm intent, without feeling overwhelmed, rushed, or lost in random tutorials.

As a qualified Visual Arts teacher and a practicing potter, I built Clay Academy after seeing the same problem again and again:
talented, motivated people quitting pottery — not because they lacked ability, but because they were never taught how to practice.

Most pottery courses focus on demonstration.
Clay Academy focuses on learning.

The Clay Academy Learning Path

A clear, progressive 3 Step System — from first skills to confident studio practice

Clay Academy is structured as a three-stage learning path, designed to nurture exponential growth at every phase of your pottery journey, within a supportive Course Community.

Each stage has a specific purpose.
Nothing is rushed.
Nothing is skipped.

Just like learning to read and write, you'll start with the essential foundations. You will then build upon these foundations to include more complex, functional and creative forms and, begin broadening your experience to move into sustained studio practice when you’re ready.*

How the 3 Step System Is Structured

  • Clear demonstrations*

  • Purposeful, immersive repetition

  • Focused practice and self evaluation

  • Visual benchmarks so you know when you’re ready to move on

  • You’re not expected to be perfect — just consistent.

Stage 1 —The Foundation Program - The First Step in the Clay Academy Path

Learn the Essential Skills that everything else depends on.

It exists to give you:

  • Control

  • Confidence

  • Clarity

So that when you move forward, you’re building on something solid.

The Outcome of the Foundation Program

Establishing essential skills and practice

By the end of the Foundation Program, you’ll be able to:

  • Center confidently

  • Control wall thickness

  • Create consistent basic forms

  • Understand clay properties*

  • Learn with direction and purpose*

Most importantly, you’ll have foundational skills you can harness to begin writing your own story.

Stage 2 — Advanced Program (Coming Soon!)

Expanding your skills and repertoire

Once foundations are solid, the Advanced Program will focus on progressive control whilst developing more advanced methods and functional pottery forms. The Advanced Program is about precision, repeatability, and scale.*

Stage 3 — Clay Academy Pro Membership* (NEW)

Ongoing professional studio development *

The Pro Membership is not another course — it’s ongoing professional development to help you:

  • Establish Your Studio Practice

  • Refine your craft with intention

  • Avoid confusion and plateaus

  • Stay consistent over time

This is where pottery becomes a sustainable practice, not a short-lived phase.*

Why the System Is Structured This Way

Clay Academy is designed using formal art education principles, but delivered in a calm, practical way.

Each stage:

  • Builds on the last

  • Reduces cognitive overload

  • Respects how physical skills are learned

  • Protects confidence

You don’t need to do everything at once.
You just need to start in the right place...

My Own Potter's Journey

Every creative journey begins with inspiration...

This work is dedicated first to my mother, Nellie, who always supported my creativity, and second to the ceramic artists of the past 100 years or so, who helped shape studio ceramics as we know it and remain an inspiration to this day.

...And all makers start their journey as a beginner.

After teaching thousands of students, I understand the excitement of touching clay for the first time. In this course, I would like to share with you my love of clay, in the hope that you might find your own creative passion here too.

In the early 1980s, while studying painting at art college, I took a ceramics class for the first time since primary school. I was immediately fascinated by how clay could transform through making and firing, so I changed my study major over to ceramics. It took me a while to get the hang of throwing on the wheel... centering was a challenge for me and it wasn't until I tried throwing on a 'left-handed' wheel that it suddenly clicked! This is where my love for clay really became a part of my identity. I was a Potter!

...About learning pottery in the 80's.

During the 1980's, learning was very different from today. Back then, there was no internet, no online videos, and very few learning resources. Information came from old library books, black-and-white magazines, and handwritten articles. Inspiration was rare and precious. I slowly built a second-hand collection of books and texts by Leach, Casson and Rhodes, amongst others. These old pioneers in studio ceramics are still considered the go-to references... but be warned... they intimidate as well as inspire! ;D

One of the few modern, full colour inspirational resources available to me at the time was Craft Arts magazine, which my mother bought for me every month while I was studying. I still treasure those magazines, along with the pottery wheel she and dad gifted me for my 21st birthday. They remain sources of inspiration and motivation to this day.

...the changing scene of ceramics and a new career.

After graduating, I bought a small second-hand gas kiln and explored working as an artist-potter. However, due to an influx of cheap imports and the recession, the handmade crafts, including ceramics, went through a long decline, and countless artists and colleges closed their studios. Like many other craftspersons, I sought more conservative employment and, in my case, I became a teacher.

It took time to convince the school I worked in that ceramics was a serious art form, but eventually I set up a proper studio and taught Ceramics and Studio Arts for over 25 years. Many students found joy and confidence creatively working with clay and I saw how powerful an experience this could be for them, especially in an increasingly digital world.

...About learning pottery in the 2020's.

Today, the situation is completely different from when I was a student and one can access thousands of articles and video demonstrations on ceramics instantly. So many people today share their creative acivities and projects with clay online, whether hand-building or on the wheel. It gladdens my heart to see the revival of handmade crafts and of clay as an engaging and innovative material. And yet, in an increasingly complex world of social media and online infotainment, whilst this seemingly makes learning easier and more accessable, it can also be confusing and overwhelming without clear direction.

...A warm invitation.

And so, since 2020, I have returned to my own studio and now teach pottery online.

Through Clay Academy, I bring together decades of experience into a clear, structured learning path, designed to support a new generation of ceramicists and help them learn this rewarding and fulfilling craft-art, within a realistic timeframe!*

I warmly invite you to join Clay Academy and begin your own potter's journey with confidence and purpose.

Best Regards,

Wendy Ellen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Clay Academy Program.

How long do I have access to the course?

You get lifetime access, including any future updates. No Stress... No Pressure.*

Do I need any prior knowledge of Pottery?

No! Our FOUNDATION PROGRAM is designed for beginners and guides you step-by-step.

(NB: If you choose to enrol in our Advanced Program - coming soon - you will need to have extensive previous experience on the wheel and understand Clay Properties and Safety Guidelines with Ceramic Materials. In this case we advise completing the Foundation Course first, before proceeding)*

Will I be able to implement my daily tasks right away?

Yes! If you already have a wheel, clay and a basic pottery toolset you are good to go! The course is hands-on and teaches you to apply your learning immediately. A short Materials List will be provided when you enrol.

If you do not have a wheel, clay or basic pottery toolset, we will show you how to make good purchase choices... we'll even provide general advice on what to look out for when purchasing a wheel second hand :D*

Can't I learn all of this on YouTube for free?

Kind Of... :D

You can certainly learn about Pottery to a mainly beginner level and some channels may even demonstrate advanced techniques.

Many of my students often start with watching the multitude of mini-tutorials on YouTube. But they discover there are often gaps in their learning and they realise that finding comprehensive education on Youtube is both hit-and-miss and time consuming.

If you are here, you recognise that YouTube will not provide a centralised or progressive pathway of skills development and studio practice, nor teach you problem-solving skills, or provide helpful feedback through a supportive community. If these benefits are what you truly believe are valuable, then Clay Academy is for you.*

Is there any support available if I get stuck?

Yes! You’ll have access to your Foundation Course resources and enjoy a supportive Free Community Membership to ask questions, post your wins and get feedback from your fellow students.*

What happens once I finish the Foundation Course?

The Clay Academy Progressive Learning System is about establishing PATHWAYS for both Students and Graduates of the Foundation Program - including an Advanced Program to accelerate your skills further with creative and functional forms - coming soon! Both during your studies and after you've graduated... we won't just leave you hanging! Our Pro Membership Subscription is about providing supportive studio practice development and learning opportunities for Students, Alumni and Potters.
